Community Volunteer Award1 Valspar employees donate many hours to non-profit organizations, thereby helping to improve the quality of life in their communities. These efforts reflect positively on the company and also provide an opportunity for volunteers to grow personally and develop other valuable skills.

The Community Volunteer Award honors those employees who have performed exceptional volunteer service in their communities. The award recognizes the individual's commitment of personal time away from work. The Valspar Foundation contributes $1,000 to the organization of each award recipient's choice.

Sylvain Desrochers, Shipper/Receiver - Cornwall, Ontario, CANADA

Community Volunteer 2008 Award Winner: Sylvain Desrochers Sylvain has been active in the Nativity Guard, a non-profit marching band unit for 30 years. The organization works primarily with under-privileged and at risk children ages 9 to 15. "Cadets" are taught how to read music and play instruments, performing in several marching band events throughout the year. Over the years, Sylvain has taught over 150 children how to play trumpet. Now a 1st Lieutenant, Sylvain volunteers over 500 hours annually to this very important cause.

Community Volunteer 2008 Award Winner: Bill HeidenBill Heiden has dedicated 9 years to 'greening' the Chesak/Martin school district with trees, shrubs and a butterfly garden. The garden has gained acclaim from the National Wildlife Federation, designating it a Wildlife Preserve. As chair of the PTA's beautification committee, Bill recently wrote a winning proposal for expanding the garden to include natural habitats of prairie grasses, plants and flowers. Native landscapes lower lawn maintenance costs and provide outdoor learning opportunities in science, history, art and music.

Community Volunteer 2008 Award Winner: Yvonne Marrone Imagine you're five years old, it's 2AM and strangers wake you up, taking you from mom and dad because of a domestic dispute. This is where the Guardian ad Litem program assists. Yvonne Marrone was appointed by the 13th Circuit Court as an advocate for three siblings, who where removed from their family by the court. Working with the court and a state appointed attorney, she ensures that the needs of the children are met, by attending school functions, taking them to doctor appointments, and visiting foster care.
